all right.

Speaker:

Welcome everybody to the inaugural episode of the Flightline podcast,

Speaker:

a new podcast about aviation.

Speaker:

Uh, we're going to be talking about all sorts of things, but

Speaker:

we'll introduce ourselves first.

Speaker:

I'm Bill Williams, one of the co hosts.

Speaker:

And I'm Tiffany Wolf.

Speaker:

You might remember us from the pilot cast, which we did a few years back,

Speaker:

and I'm the host of the student pilot cast, and Tiffany's been around aviation

Speaker:

probably even longer than I have.

Speaker:

I'm not sure, even though I'm the old guy on the team, but we wanted

Speaker:

to, uh, Have a place, an outlet for us to, um, talk about aviation.

Speaker:

We always want to, we want to get more involved all the time.

Speaker:

And, this flight line podcast is something that we've been wanting

Speaker:

to put together for a while.

Speaker:

And so we're excited to be doing that.

Speaker:

when we came up with the name, uh, Tiffany had a really good sort of,

Speaker:

um, uh, reason why we're calling it the flight lane, a tie in.

Speaker:

Exactly.

Speaker:

Exactly.

Speaker:

You want to, you want to tell them about that?

Speaker:

Yeah, I think this sums it up.

Speaker:

Flightline, the definition leans in towards a parking or

Speaker:

a servicing area for airplanes.

Speaker:

And we are excited to have the Flightline podcast that's a parking

Speaker:

or servicing area for pilots.

Speaker:

So just a wonderful place to come and share stories, ideas, thoughts, wisdom,

Speaker:

which you'll be getting the wisdom from me and a lot of stories from Bill.

Speaker:

Exactly.

Speaker:

Exactly.

Speaker:

Again, I'm the old guy.

Speaker:

I'm just not, I haven't gathered all the wisdom yet.

Speaker:

but yeah, we, we don't even know exactly the type of format.

Speaker:

we're going to have, but we're going to have a mix of video and audio, long form,

Speaker:

short form, uh, we're going to, we're going to do a bunch of different things.

Speaker:

we'll talk about this in a minute, but we're heading to Oshkosh next week.

Speaker:

And so we wanted to get this inaugural.

Speaker:

Edition or, um, inaugural, uh, what do you call it?

Speaker:

Episode.

Speaker:

That's what you call it.

Speaker:

It's like, I just started podcasting, even though I started back in 2008.

Speaker:

Um, but we wanted to get this inaugural episode out and, get it out before

Speaker:

Oshkosh so we could announce this.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

We definitely, if anybody sees this beforehand, and I'll announce this over

Speaker:

on Student Pilot Cast too, uh, but if anybody sees this before Oshkosh, we

Speaker:

want to meet up with some of you as well.

Speaker:

So we're going to talk about that in a little bit.

Speaker:

Uh, but like I said, it's going to be all kinds of content.

Speaker:

We're going to be gathering information and we just want to share it with you.

Speaker:

And, uh, I think it might get us out to more air shows too.

Speaker:

Don't you think, Tiffany?

Speaker:

I think so.

Speaker:

I think that's definitely going to happen.

Speaker:

You know, we have a cute little one in San Diego here.

Speaker:

You could come over to called Miramar.

Speaker:

Yeah, dun, dun, dun.

Speaker:

I was gonna start, I was gonna start humming the Top Gun theme,

Speaker:

but we'd probably get like, like a copyright strike or something.

Speaker:

Copyright

Speaker:

infringement lawsuits.

Speaker:

think the

Speaker:

beastie boys just sued, KFC or something like that.

Speaker:

Chili's for using a beastie boy song on,

Speaker:

On a commercial or something or on Instagram.

Speaker:

Oh, even worse.

Speaker:

Oh yeah, we don't want any part of that.

Speaker:

but anyway, we're gonna have some fun and hopefully bring you along with us.

Speaker:

And so we, we wanted to introduce ourselves.

Speaker:

Um, we can go back in history just a little bit, but we won't

Speaker:

bore you with a long, a long, uh, history of what's going on.

Speaker:

But Tiffany, why don't you bring everybody up to speed since the pilot cast days?

Speaker:

For you, I mean.

Speaker:

Oh, goodness, I don't even know how to start.

Speaker:

That really

Speaker:

That really is a difficult one.

Speaker:

I worked in the aviation industry in multiple different, um,

Speaker:

up

Speaker:

facets, uh, worked for a couple of different companies and some ups and

Speaker:

downs, some crashes, some, not me, uh,

Speaker:

But the I ended up working for a flight school during COVID.

Speaker:

And that was quite an interesting experience.

Speaker:

So like most people, there was an opportunity to pivot

Speaker:

and change into a different.

Speaker:

I don't know, right, I just changed to a different company.

Speaker:

I started my own small business.

Speaker:

So T Wolf marketing is out there to help you with all of your digital needs.

Speaker:

And then I also work for another company where we have the opportunity to do a

Speaker:

lot of flying in a citation Mustang.

Speaker:

So I enjoy that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I enjoy that.

Speaker:

I haven't flown in

Speaker:

Sorry, Bill.

Speaker:

I didn't mean to rub it in.

Speaker:

But, yeah, awesome.

Speaker:

Um, I took, um, I took a long hiatus from flying for a while when my

Speaker:

kids were, you know, growing up.

Speaker:

We were just doing other things.

Speaker:

We were doing a lot of boating and motorcycle riding and dirt bike

Speaker:

riding and all kinds of other things.

Speaker:

And if you, uh, Listen to the student pilot cast.

Speaker:

You know this already, but I'll I'll be quick.

Speaker:

But after a long hiatus last year, I had some changes in my life and I decided

Speaker:

to go full bore back into aviation.

Speaker:

And so I've been training a ton.

Speaker:

Um, I'm actually currently working on my CFI.

Speaker:

Hopefully I'll be done next month.

Speaker:

And I've gotten a bunch of other ratings in between.

Speaker:

And I'm just having a great time.

Speaker:

And, needed an outlet.

Speaker:

This is kind of how this started again is I've got, I've got student

Speaker:

pilot cast, which is, is going strong again, but I needed an outlet.

Speaker:

Tiffany did too.

Speaker:

And we decided, Hey, let's start doing things in the

Speaker:

aviation podcasting world again.

Speaker:

And so that's how this all got started.

Speaker:

So hopefully we'll, we'll all have some fun together.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

many adventures to share and, you know, I don't know about you.

Speaker:

We, I know we talked about this once, but the idea of standing in front

Speaker:

of something and taking a picture to post it was not at all my style.

Speaker:

So I'm excited to, to, to have an outlet where we can actually tell

Speaker:

our stories in a, in a proper manner.

Speaker:

And, um, hopefully people will enjoy listening to them and, um, build a

Speaker:

bigger community around this wonderful community that we call aviation, which,

Speaker:

um, If you don't mind, brings us to our next point and our very exciting point.

Speaker:

I've been going to Oshkosh goodness since 2007.

Speaker:

I think is when I first went I was in college and had the

Speaker:

most incredible experience.

Speaker:

And since that time, Bill and I we've met up a few times for Podapalouza.

Speaker:

If you remember that one way back in the day, that was a good one.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

I've been going

Speaker:

but

Speaker:

2008.

Speaker:

So see, you started before me.

Speaker:

Sheesh.

Speaker:

Well, right around the same time.

Speaker:

But, with all of this wisdom that we have already spoken about,

Speaker:

Bill and I were chatting and we thought, gosh, you know what?

Speaker:

There's so many neat stories and places to go and hacks, if you will, about Oshkosh.

Speaker:

We should share those.

Speaker:

And so today we're going to go through our top five favorite hacks for Oshkosh.

Speaker:

And one of the things about Oshkosh is that we all have our own

Speaker:

opinions, um, stories, experiences.

Speaker:

So we would love to hear what your top hacks are as well.

Speaker:

Um, you can check us out on our brand, brand new social media.

Speaker:

We have flight lane podcast, um, on Instagram and a flight

Speaker:

lane podcast on Facebook.

Speaker:

So we'll put a post on there later.

Speaker:

And we would love to hear from you and, what your top, um, hacks are.

Speaker:

So Bill, without any further

Speaker:

anybody this year.

Speaker:

But, um, for future years for sure.

Speaker:

And by the way,

Speaker:

we're not experts.

Speaker:

There's people that have been going for 40 years, but we get to hang out with them.

Speaker:

And what Tiffany didn't really mention the real reason we started

Speaker:

the podcast is we just felt like we needed some more friends.

Speaker:

So we're hoping you join us as we, as we do this stuff and please be our friends.

Speaker:

We just don't have enough.

Speaker:

So anyway, yeah, let's get into it.

Speaker:

Let's start with, with some of the hacks or some of the, tips that we've got.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

so I would say that while we put this in at number five, I think most of us

Speaker:

who've ever gone or who are going to go should know that this is technically

Speaker:

the most important rule of Oshkosh.

Speaker:

Never say no.

Speaker:

So, uh, First time I went, I was, as I mentioned, I was a college student.

Speaker:

I was working in a booth for, for somebody and I would work all day.

Speaker:

And then all night I was there by myself.

Speaker:

I had met some people on Facebook, which now seems a little creepy to

Speaker:

do, and then meet up with random strangers, but Oshkosh, it's okay.

Speaker:

Surprisingly,

Speaker:

Things are different there.

Speaker:

Yeah, things

Speaker:

Yeah, they are different.

Speaker:

different.

Speaker:

I always say Oshkosh is like a burning man.

Speaker:

But instead of debauchery and nudity, it's like flight jackets and avgas.

Speaker:

and super clean grounds And like there's no trash anywhere.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's totally like the exact opposite of burning man Yeah, this is true

Speaker:

But it is wonderful.

Speaker:

It has that family feel.

Speaker:

So never say no.

Speaker:

Okay, the opportunity is everywhere at Oshkosh.

Speaker:

Everybody is your friend, whether they know it or not.

Speaker:

So there was a fabulous story.

Speaker:

so I was working for Rob Holland

Speaker:

my buddy

Speaker:

I called, called my buddy, Steve Swift, who's a warbird guy and had him

Speaker:

come over and, uh, we hung out for a little bit at the, um, performers area.

Speaker:

And then Steve and somebody else that he was with said, Hey, what

Speaker:

are you doing in the morning?

Speaker:

I don't know.

Speaker:

What do you got?

Speaker:

So 6 a.

Speaker:

m.

Speaker:

I woke up and met them at the Warbirds area and we did a flight of six, I

Speaker:

think, um, T6s for a photo flight.

Speaker:

And it was amazing.

Speaker:

And there it made the cover of, I forget which magazine, one of the flying

Speaker:

magazines, um, which we'll, we'll have

Speaker:

You've never

Speaker:

It was so

Speaker:

story, Tiffany.

Speaker:

epic.

Speaker:

Either that or I'm so old I forgot, but

Speaker:

I don't, I don't think so

Speaker:

you've ever told me that story and I can't believe that.

Speaker:

That's really amazing.

Speaker:

It's perfect

Speaker:

it doesn't end there.

Speaker:

Yeah, it was so great.

Speaker:

So there, the, the cover shot is stunning though.

Speaker:

There was like six T sixes lined on top of each other.

Speaker:

And these guys were in formation probably like a week or so ago.

Speaker:

Six minutes easily like that, where they've got helmets on and they're looking

Speaker:

up and trying to keep from, you know, trying to keep their distance from one

Speaker:

another while the, uh, the cameraman is telling his pilot how to line them up.

Speaker:

And then the pilot saying, Hey, we're getting ready to go over some a greener

Speaker:

area that kind of looks like, you know, The vintage of aircraft that you're

Speaker:

shooting and the light's about to be good.

Speaker:

And so meanwhile, the pilots with helmets on are still head completely

Speaker:

back trying to fly the airplane.

Speaker:

And it was, it was orchestrated beautifully.

Speaker:

Now, after that, what do you want to come to lunch with us?

Speaker:

Of course I do.

Speaker:

So we go to

Speaker:

and So, yes, is the answer.

Speaker:

yes, never say no.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

We go to lunch and the, uh, the pilot and the photographer were sitting

Speaker:

there chatting and they said, Hey, you're more than welcome to come

Speaker:

out with us on our next flight.

Speaker:

And you can be the safety pilot.

Speaker:

Okay, cool.

Speaker:

So we took off in there.

Speaker:

Bonanza that has, um,

Speaker:

I'm going to butcher this.

Speaker:

I'm going to butcher this, but it's basically he's got holes

Speaker:

cut out in the back of the,

Speaker:

Bonanza so

Speaker:

So he can sit, he can sit down in the back and take pictures from any

Speaker:

angle without being, without having the fuselage in the way, if you will.

Speaker:

there was

Speaker:

And so, yeah, just, just being out there was so cool.

Speaker:

There's some warbirds coming in and it's, it was like three or four sky Raiders.

Speaker:

And this was really neat.

Speaker:

They were planning the entire shot to be, as I mentioned, just a second ago.

Speaker:

Um, Over a certain area that would mimic was that Vietnam with the Sky Raiders?

Speaker:

Oh,

Speaker:

raiders?

Speaker:

Yeah, I think so.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yes, we'll pretend.

Speaker:

Yes, we'll pretend.

Speaker:

were looking for

Speaker:

But so they were looking for a certain patch of ground underneath

Speaker:

the Sky Raiders that would make it look historically correct.

Speaker:

And then they're also waiting for the clouds to part.

Speaker:

So you get that perfect little bit of sunlight on there.

Speaker:

Was just an amazing experience.

Speaker:

And then, and then the sky Raiders land and another group of airplanes.

Speaker:

I don't remember what that was, came up and just amazing.

Speaker:

And then at the same time, that was two flights, uh, that I had

Speaker:

the opportunity to be in that was taking off at Oshkosh and, and, and.

Speaker:

That right there is the coolest experience.

Speaker:

Sitting in a plane watching these amazing human beings in the tower get people going

Speaker:

and there's, you know, the occasional oh shoot moment and, but that was, that was

Speaker:

my very favorite never say no moment.

Speaker:

Oh, I love it.

Speaker:

Yeah, it never say no is a great way to say it.

Speaker:

Um, it kind of leads into what I was thinking about.

Speaker:

So Tiffany and I, Tiffany and I didn't go over in detail what we were gonna

Speaker:

talk about as far as these tips go.

Speaker:

So I don't even know if this one has a number.

Speaker:

But it's leading me to, um, and I didn't hear that story

Speaker:

actually before she told it.

Speaker:

So I love this.

Speaker:

We're, um, we're doing this as we go here, but it does kind of lead me into

Speaker:

the never say no thing is a tip I would have is, especially if you're staying

Speaker:

off site, be on the grounds at night and not just for the night air show, because

Speaker:

you've heard people say this often.

Speaker:

We've said it.

Speaker:

We've been saying it for years.

Speaker:

It's about that group of people or gaining more people in your group or

Speaker:

in your sphere or meeting new people.

Speaker:

And a lot of that happens kind of after hours, not, not during the show,

Speaker:

you know, so that's kind of another opportunity to expand that group of

Speaker:

people, that group of friends that we're trying to expand with the podcast.

Speaker:

Yeah, agreed.

Speaker:

I think we actually did have that one on there.

Speaker:

Oh, awesome.

Speaker:

Which, Was number three.

Speaker:

So let's skip to number three, because I wanted to add to that being on site,

Speaker:

like you say, is so valuable that the amount of people that you get to know

Speaker:

that you share this incredible passion with, um, some you end up learning

Speaker:

that you work with a lot of the airline guys meet up, the alumni's meet up.

Speaker:

Um, there's always something going on, but there is one beacon

Speaker:

is one

Speaker:

is always available.

Speaker:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker:

Every night, the S.

Speaker:

O.

Speaker:

S.

Speaker:

bar,

Speaker:

You

Speaker:

you might notice it by the giant moon floating above it, which I

Speaker:

have mistaken for a moon every year

Speaker:

year since I started going.

Speaker:

Some of the.

Speaker:

Adult beverages.

Speaker:

This is

Speaker:

It's a little easier to mistake that for, for a moon.

Speaker:

But the S.

Speaker:

O.

Speaker:

S.

Speaker:

bar, if you haven't been there, it is Boy, I don't even know how to

Speaker:

You can, you can put it into Google.

Speaker:

actually a happy face.

Speaker:

I know that you guys have seen it if you've been there,

Speaker:

but it can look like a moon.

Speaker:

It's a yellow happy face balloon.

Speaker:

Everyone mistakes it.

Speaker:

It happens to the best of us.

Speaker:

Those are some great nights, but you can, it's off.

Speaker:

It's outside of the gate.

Speaker:

Um, but you can get food there.

Speaker:

I think they expanded it to have like wine bars as well.

Speaker:

The sodas and non alcoholic drinks.

Speaker:

They have a beautiful bonfire with Adirondack chairs all around, and it just

Speaker:

creates an amazing gathering space and they do live music, which is a blast.

Speaker:

a cool place to meet up.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Speaking, speaking of meetup,

Speaker:

I'm going to take a little detour here since we're talking about meeting up and

Speaker:

we would love to meet some of you guys.

Speaker:

I know there won't be a lot of people who've heard this episode since we're

Speaker:

a brand new podcast, but I'll announce this on student pilot cast as well.

Speaker:

We'll put it on social media.

Speaker:

Hopefully you find it.

Speaker:

Somehow we'll talk to our old friends, but we would love to meet anybody

Speaker:

who wants to come and meet up again.

Speaker:

We're, we're trying to build our friend group here.

Speaker:

So, We're thinking, uh, we'll be at the, at the Lightspeed Tent, which

Speaker:

is just, let me, let me think about this for a second, which is gonna

Speaker:

be immediately north of Hanger B.

Speaker:

Um, just come by the Lightspeed Tent, at 4 o'clock on Wednesday, 4 o'clock

Speaker:

in the afternoon on Wednesday, and Tiffany and I will be hanging out there.

Speaker:

so, come by there and, uh, See if we can hang out a little bit.

Speaker:

Um, that'll be fun.

Speaker:

Sound good to you, Tiffany.

Speaker:

that.

Speaker:

I love those meetups.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Well, I can't say no, because I'd break that rule number five.

Speaker:

You can't say no, exactly.

Speaker:

Can't say no, can't do it.

Speaker:

I wanted to talk about, um, just a quick experience that's a little more calm

Speaker:

than being at the, uh, the beer tent.

Speaker:

I was just thinking about it while I was talking about being there at night.

Speaker:

So a couple of years ago in 2022, it was the first time I was able to take my boys.

Speaker:

They're all adults now.

Speaker:

Um, again, I'm old, uh, they're all adults now, but, um, a couple of years

Speaker:

ago we were there and we just have these impromptu things that happen.

Speaker:

We were hanging out with some new friends that we had made at the, stole

Speaker:

demonstration that they were doing over at the ultra light field, the grass field.

Speaker:

We just loved hanging out there.

Speaker:

So we were doing that.

Speaker:

A lot of the nights we were there and we were kind of walking through the grounds

Speaker:

on the way back and we ended up having this epic cornhole tournament because

Speaker:

one of the airplane vendors had cornhole sitting there and even though the show was

Speaker:

closed, um, there's still people kind of, you know, walking by and things like that.

Speaker:

And we ended up playing cornhole for like, It had to be three hours.

Speaker:

I don't think we got back to our campsite until midnight or something Um, and

Speaker:

of course we were doing interviews and everything the next day So we didn't get

Speaker:

a lot of sleep because like tiffany said you just don't say no And so sometimes

Speaker:

these epic little memories that you have happen Spontaneously just because you

Speaker:

weren't saying no just because you were on site At night, uh, when supposedly

Speaker:

nothing's happening, but there's always going to be something happening.

Speaker:

So that's my little extra, my extra story there for that.

Speaker:

Why don't you take us to the

Speaker:

love

Speaker:

one?

Speaker:

Is

Speaker:

next one is off site locations.

Speaker:

There are some really great spots around Oshkosh that usually are probably

Speaker:

hosting maybe two or three tables at a restaurant or they're just not very busy.

Speaker:

So you'll walk into some of these restaurants or bars

Speaker:

and they're just jam packed.

Speaker:

It's like for one week during the year, that place is slammed.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Oh my God, it's incredible.

Speaker:

And the locals will always try to get a front row seat to

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

I will say that my very favorite spot and a must for a good greasy spoon

Speaker:

burger and a beer is Pete's Garage.

Speaker:

It's right downtown Oshkosh.

Speaker:

Fantastic little hangout.

Speaker:

They have a little outdoor seating area.

Speaker:

And I'm in California, so everything's really expensive here.

Speaker:

But after that T6 flight, I invited that whole team out and I was able to

Speaker:

buy them all their dinners and a couple pitchers of beer for like under 200 bucks.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Pete's garage.

Speaker:

That's a win.

Speaker:

So I'm going to add to that, um, Um, there's, there's a couple

Speaker:

of, uh, food vendors that are just outside the actual gates.

Speaker:

And, I don't know in my experience it seems like it's like half the price

Speaker:

of the food inside and it's literally right there So yeah, there's a lot

Speaker:

of stuff outside There's a food vendor that we ate at quite a bit.

Speaker:

That's right by the bus terminal which is outside the gates and So you might want to

Speaker:

check that out So yeah, there's, there's lots of things to discover outside.

Speaker:

Speaking of outside, it's not really outside of AirVenture,

Speaker:

but it's outside the main gates.

Speaker:

Um, we didn't talk about this before, but you got to make

Speaker:

it over to the seaplane base.

Speaker:

If you've never been, you got to go over there.

Speaker:

It's super chill.

Speaker:

Um, bring a lawn chair, bring a blanket, just hang out there.

Speaker:

It's, it's super nice over there.

Speaker:

And, It's like a grove of trees and it's by the water.

Speaker:

So it is actually cooler over there.

Speaker:

Um, it makes a difference and it does get hot, which is going to lead us to one of

Speaker:

our next tips, but, but that's a, that's a

Speaker:

you're on the seaplane, there's always, uh, at least one or

Speaker:

two people swimming out there.

Speaker:

And then you can also do the boat ride too, which is fun.

Speaker:

That takes you around the

Speaker:

Shows you all the airplanes that are, that are tied off out there.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's like a jungle cruise for airplanes.

Speaker:

Yep, yep.

Speaker:

That's pretty cool.

Speaker:

it out there.

Speaker:

That one's fun.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So while we're talking about cool spots, number two, this is, this

Speaker:

is my favorite piece of advice.

Speaker:

The coolest spot at AirVenture,

Speaker:

In case you didn't know, Wisconsin is hot and humid in the summer.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

blistering hot.

Speaker:

This is, this is the tip that I told my friend and his dad, the kid

Speaker:

who's just about to get his pilot's license and they came out to Oshkosh

Speaker:

last year, I said, I just met them.

Speaker:

It was 2000 degrees outside in the sun.

Speaker:

And, uh, we're just chatting a little bit, getting to know each other.

Speaker:

It's my mom's friends, family.

Speaker:

sitting there going, you

Speaker:

I'm sitting there going, you know, I just want to give you some insight.

Speaker:

Oshkosh is the most wonderful place.

Speaker:

It's a great experience.

Speaker:

Blah, blah, blah, blah.

Speaker:

Garmin tents, the greatest, greatest place to be, or the library is

Speaker:

the second place, greatest place.

Speaker:

And these two guys are looking at me like, What is this woman talking about?

Speaker:

Uh, yeah, just like, no, why would we go inside anywhere?

Speaker:

And so the next day I get a text from him.

Speaker:

We're watching the show in the Garmin tent.

Speaker:

Yeah, cause you can still see, you can still see from the Garmin tent, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's, it is, it, you,

Speaker:

by Cool avionics and all kinds of other things.

Speaker:

They actually usually have some, I forgot about this when we were talking about

Speaker:

it before, but they usually have some places you can plug your phone in if it

Speaker:

needs recharging, stuff like that, too.

Speaker:

So it's a pretty good place to be.

Speaker:

the, yeah, you can, you can play with all the, um,

Speaker:

The GPS's and the Yes,

Speaker:

you.

Speaker:

Yeah, you can play with all the GPSs.

Speaker:

The guys will let you go over there and touch all the buttons.

Speaker:

Yeah, lots of buttons and knobs and blinky lights.

Speaker:

It's, it's a pilot's dream.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's wonderful.

Speaker:

And then over in the antiques area, there's a little library in there.

Speaker:

Or bookstore, it's probably maybe 10 by 10.

Speaker:

It's so cute, just interesting to go into the little bookstore that opens up.

Speaker:

For one week out of the year.

Speaker:

And they have the old school air conditioner in the window that you'll find

Speaker:

me standing in front of most of the time.

Speaker:

It's

Speaker:

when I have my boys there we spent some time in the museum for the same

Speaker:

reason it's air conditioned in there There's a gift shop there as well.

Speaker:

And uh, if you haven't been in a couple years, you might not know that ea put a

Speaker:

um I'm gonna butcher what they called it.

Speaker:

It's like a pilot training center You Or something right next to the museum.

Speaker:

They've got a bunch of, um, classes that go on in there and, uh, they've, they've

Speaker:

got, um, simulators and things like that.

Speaker:

You can't just go in and use the simulators.

Speaker:

They, you have to be signed up for the classes and so on,

Speaker:

but it is air conditioned and you can hang out there too.

Speaker:

So, um, yeah, you know, museum is a good one too.

Speaker:

have you ever done one of the classes at Oshkosh?

Speaker:

I have.

Speaker:

I think there's like riveting and welding and what, what did you do?

Speaker:

Um, well, I did one of the simulator training sessions, um, when, uh, the

Speaker:

first year it was there, which was 2022 So that was that was pretty interesting.

Speaker:

There was classroom and there was a simulator.

Speaker:

Uh, they've got a bunch of redbirds in there now.

Speaker:

Um, so they had different topics.

Speaker:

again, you can sign up if there's openings.

Speaker:

you can sign up for him.

Speaker:

If not, you can be on the wait list, but they do this year round too.

Speaker:

So not just during the show.

Speaker:

This is a permanent building.

Speaker:

It's again, I'm, I didn't prepare for this with the name.

Speaker:

just remembering back and I think it's called like the pilot training

Speaker:

center or something like that.

Speaker:

We'll put it in the show notes if I can find it.

Speaker:

But, um, But yeah, they've got those.

Speaker:

But then the classic classes that you're talking about over in the forums,

Speaker:

they've got all sorts of things that have to do with, um, either training

Speaker:

or building an airplane or, um, you know, it could be any number of things.

Speaker:

And then of course the vendors themselves sometimes do training.

Speaker:

If they've got the bigger tents and things, they might Garmin,

Speaker:

for instance, if we go back to them, um, might do training.

Speaker:

Little classes that, you know, teach you something about some of

Speaker:

the avionics and things like that.

Speaker:

So, and we're forgetting all kinds of other things that are going on.

Speaker:

So there's a lot of learning opportunities at Oshkosh for sure.

Speaker:

yeah, I think Lycoming.

Speaker:

I know that if you go over to the Lycoming area, they've got an

Speaker:

entire, well, it's a small area, but they have a little stadium set up.

Speaker:

They've got some bleachers and they do some sort of classes over there.

Speaker:

Oh, cool.

Speaker:

Yeah, there's, there's lots of opportunities for that.

Speaker:

So yeah, perfect.

Speaker:

That's a good

Speaker:

Okay, and number one.

Speaker:

Number one.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

number one tip.

Speaker:

I think this was, um, how you can go to Oshkosh for free or

Speaker:

at least for a reduced cost.

Speaker:

Bill, more enthusiasm.

Speaker:

How do you get to Oshkosh for free?

Speaker:

Well, as you know, there are.

Speaker:

Hundreds if not thousands of aviation vendors there and a lot of

Speaker:

times these vendors, especially the bigger ones Need help at the show.

Speaker:

So reach out to your favorite vendors or follow them on social media or sign

Speaker:

up for mailing lists or whatever it is.

Speaker:

Just email them and offer your time.

Speaker:

And a lot of times you can be an adjunct or a demonstrator.

Speaker:

I was, I was chatting with Kent Shook, earlier today, from the pilot cast.

Speaker:

And he reminded me, I'd completely forgotten about this, but he reminded

Speaker:

me that back in 2010, I think it was, um, we were at Oshkosh and he

Speaker:

was one of the beta testers of the new iPad version of ForeFlight.

Speaker:

Back when they were just a budding little company.

Speaker:

And, um, they got so swamped at the show that they emailed all of the beta

Speaker:

testers and said, can you please come and help us demonstrate the program at

Speaker:

At, you know, their little booth, they just had a back then they had a little

Speaker:

booth inside, um, you know, one of the hangers and it was mobbed by people.

Speaker:

So there's always these startups, but also some of the more established.

Speaker:

companies, they sometimes need help and they'll either pay for your flight or

Speaker:

they'll certainly pay for your pass to get in, um, any number of things that they

Speaker:

might do, um, if, if they need some help.

Speaker:

And, so that's one way that you can get there for a reduced price.

Speaker:

in fact, um, I'm doing some adjunct work this year.

Speaker:

With Lightspeed.

Speaker:

So, uh, we talked about meeting up there.

Speaker:

Um, Um, I'll be there several of the days near the end of

Speaker:

the week, basically all day.

Speaker:

So you can always come by and hang out with me a little bit.

Speaker:

I know that Lightspeed this year is trying to gather comfort.

Speaker:

About their headsets and other headsets.

Speaker:

And so, they would love to get your input.

Speaker:

if you have a little bit of time, you can come by lightspeed tent, hang out with

Speaker:

me and they'll have you try on a bunch of things and, and take some surveys.

Speaker:

They're kind of doing some market research on that for, for the future.

Speaker:

So that would be helpful.

Speaker:

Um, but you can see all the new products and things like that, but, it's a,

Speaker:

it's a good way to get there for free.

Speaker:

And I'll be hanging out with Lightspeed a lot of the week.

Speaker:

So come by and see me.

Speaker:

It'll be easy to spot.

Speaker:

What, what days are you going to be at the Lightspeed booth?

Speaker:

Um, I haven't memorized, um, the exact days, but I think it'll be

Speaker:

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, at least.

Speaker:

Um, so, and it'll be basically be, you know, unless I'm off doing something

Speaker:

else, uh, for a little while or grabbing a bite to eat or something, it'll be

Speaker:

basically during the hours of the show.

Speaker:

Very cool.

Speaker:

Well, I'll come see you.

Speaker:

Definitely.

Speaker:

Hopefully some of our new friends will as well.

Speaker:

So those are our top five.

Speaker:

Oshkosh hacks for now, obviously, and we'll probably have a few more

Speaker:

after, after this Oshkosh, but we would love to hear what your

Speaker:

favorite hacks or tips or tricks are.

Speaker:

Speaker:

Speaker:

Speaker:

but definitely reach out to us.

Speaker:

Speaker:

over time, but, um, we're just launching.

Speaker:

Speaker:

no, thank you for listening.

Speaker:

Stay tuned for more shows and we'll see you on the flight line.

Speaker:

And hopefully we'll see you at Oshkosh.

Speaker:
